  • Parliament’s Budget Session will run from January 28 to April 2, 2026.
  • The session will include the presentation and discussion of the Union Budget.
  • Lawmakers will pause mid-session before resuming debates and legislative business.

New Delhi India’s Parliament has officially announced the schedule for the 2026 Budget Session which will begin on January 28 and run until April 2. The decision came after President Droupadi Murmu approved the summoning of both houses on the recommendation of the Union government. This session marks the start of India’s key fiscal deliberations for the year ahead. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed that the session will be conducted in two distinct phases. The first portion will take lawmakers through mid-February, followed by a recess before reconvening in March. This approach allows standing committees and ministers to review budget proposals and engage in detailed discussions. The opening day is expected to feature the President’s address to a joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, setting out the government’s priorities. In line with tradition, the session will also include the presentation of the Union Budget, providing lawmakers with an opportunity to debate policy directions and expenditure plans. A unique aspect of this year’s schedule is the planned recess between phases. Parliament will break after early February business and resume in early March to continue deliberations through to the session’s conclusion in April. This pause is meant to give committees time to examine the demands for grants from various ministries and departments. With the session spanning more than two months, members are expected to engage in wide-ranging discussions on economic policy, government spending and legislative reform. The extended calendar gives lawmakers a structured window to scrutinize proposals and shape India’s financial roadmap.
